Grab Techniques from Nebraska

David Carnley, student of Shawn Steiner, sent in a collection of grab techniques from the curriculum of Christopher N. Geary’s system. I’ll eventually find a more permanent home for them, perhaps in the grab section, but for now here’s a look at one way to teach grabs.   Thanks Dave!

Hi Matt, I wanted to share some info with you about grab defenses in our school. In addition to the grab defenses, we also train a couple of lock flows that incorporate grab releases and chin-na locks and counters. I’m curious if any of these grab techniques appear in Combos that we don’t train.

  •   2 hand lapel grab (we call this one Grab Defensive Maneuver #2, or just “grab 2”) (there is significant instruction of how to absorb any momentum from the grab and regain stability that I am not going to include)Pin attacker’s right wrist to your chest with your left hand. Step back with left foot into right side horse, pulling attacker into right back-2-knuckle strike to solar plexus under his arms. Drop right arm circling it upwards striking with downward elbow to right bicep (distal head of bicep ideally). Strike with right outward elbow to attacker’s right temple
  • 1 hand lapel grab (“grab 1”)(much less momentum in a 1 hand grab, attacker’s intent is different)Pin attacker’s right wrist to your chest with your left handscissor-step into right half-moon while striking right downward knife hand to right arm (radial nerve). Strike with right outward knife hand to right side of attacker’s neck, grabbing clothing after strike using right hand on shoulder. Pull attacker down into right rising knee to solar plexus without putting right foot down, execute right outside reap (leg hock) to attacker’s right leg, maintaining grip on right hand and right shoulder.  Take attacker down on their back as you land in horse facing 9. Release right hand, swing right hand up clockwise strike back of attacker’s right elbow (hand still trapped at your lapel). This will roll attacker to their leftright front punch to attacker’s right floating ribs
  • Front choke (“grab 3”) Step left foot out into horse stance while striking right palm heel to inside of attacker’s right wrist. Strike attacker’s left wrist with right outward knife hand simultaneous with left thrust punch to solar plexus. Left front kick to attacker’s solar plexus. We don’t have any defenses for “rear choke” with the hands. Anatomically, an attacker cannot choke you with his hand from behind.  Try it!  uncomfortable? yes.  Choking me? no. However we do have a defense for a shoulder grab from behind (grab 6), and for a “arm wrapped around neck from behind” also known as Rear Naked Choke to the MMA fans (grab 8).
  • Wrist grabsWe have 2 techniques for same-side single wrist grab (his right grabs my left or vice-cersa).  One considers the punching scenario and one the pulling scenario. We have 2 technique against a double wrist grab, one considers pulling attack (Grab 15, see below), the other attack is control only w/o pulling
  •

  • Double Wrist Grab (Grab 15)(similar to grab 1 above you may need to perform certain stabilizing mechanisms here before any resistance is viable) Step forward with right foot bringing right hand back to elbow position. Execute a downward/inward right thrust punch across your body, causing attacker’s wrists to crash together, release yoru right wrist and possibly both wrists. Strike attacker’s right temple with right outward elbow.
  • We consider more attacks: bearhug from behind arms trapped (grab 5), bearhug from front arms trapped (grab 7), side headlock (grab 9), front choke while under mount (grab 10), and more…
