I am beginning to share the forms that I have been doing lately. They are the core of Kempo Jutsu, the art of my mentor and long time instructor Professor Kimo Ferreira. This series bears the Pinion name, but on the mainland they are often referred to as “Kempojutsu Kata 3” because some of the schools who began to learn them already had a Pinion / Pinan series that was different and somewhat based on the Heians. These more directly correspond to the 1-5 Kata series in their style, but are in many cases derived from the Palamas sets.
The form Shirukuma from Kempo Jutsu Kai
Kempo Jutsu, as created by Professor Kimo Ferreira, introduced the form Shirukuma from Motobu-ryu as a tribute to Motobu Chosei, Sensei. The structure is similar to many fundamental karate forms, but the Hikite returns closer to the centerline / solar plexus rather than to the hip in similar forms.
This is a somewhat older video that I’ve recently uploaded to Youtube, but the front and side views hopefully make the movement clear.
In memory of GM Fred Villari
I got my start in a Fred Villari’s Studios of Self Defense. Most folks who come to this website got there start in a dojo that is or was connected to him in some way. Although I didn’t always agree with him, his impact on the Kempo community is undeniable, and his passing affects his family, friends and legions of students. He had the foresight to establish a leadership team for his schools, and his name will live on in them. Our condolences go out to those affected by this loss.
