One of the signature techniques of American Kenpo is Five Swords. If you see a demo of EPAK and don’t see it, I’ll lose kenpo demo bingo. Here’s the EPAK Version:
Well, Nick Cerio spent time with Ed Parker as his ‘Coach’, so naturally Five Swords found its way into his arsenal. Mark Golden offers up video of the Nick Cerio’s version. With extra credit.
As they say in high school English, “Compare, contrast, discuss.”
ok this is not like epaks 5 swords, this is 5 sword hands, into the advanced version 9 sword hands.
as uke punches in cat stance with left leg simultaneously deliver a left outward shuto block to wrist. step down to outside of uke;s right leg and deliver a left shuto to side of neck.Right downward shuto to collarbone as left hand checks under right.Left hand then cross hand shutos bridge of uke’s throat.right hand driving shuto to collarbone as you unwind at hip.( to go into 9 swords hands)
this will drive opponnent back so quickly shuffle up and deliver a simultaneouse right reverse ridge to groin with left palm heel to kidneys, always shuffling forwad, after 3 of these repeated, straighten up your body simultaneouse right forarm under chin and left hand checks back of head. this props uke up on his feet.
right shuto to throat for finish and left hand holds back of uke’s head.
EPAK ‘s version isn’t really seen in this one,but is in cerio’s hook punch kempo we posted.
The beginning of this is what we have as 5 knives. Outward lt. knife hand block. lt driving knife hand to arm side of shoulder/deltoid (top of bicep where shoulder meets) opening and stretching clavicle. rt. driving knife hand to opponents right clavicle, lt cross knife hand to throat, rt. driving knife hand to nose. we also do 5 knives but the back punch to solar plexus does not happen until 7 swords.. hahaha.. also from seminars I have taken out here on east coast with Parker guys. the first block on 5 swords was a slicing block with rt. knife hand hoping to destroy radial nerve.
Also Matt and I lost a huge bet on a Parker seminar last year. We paired up as usual cuz we like to pound on each other. But to our delight the particular instructor that we were learning from did none of the techniques we bet on. So it was a lot of fun.. especially when we started ad libbing and got the attention of the teaching instructor who appreciated our experimenting. So hands off to Prof. Cogliandro who went outside the Parker norm of seminars and let us have some fun.
