Shihan Paul Parent

I don’t know much about him, other than that he’s an instructor in Kensho-ryu, which appears to be a Nick Cerio’s Kenpo offshoot.  I saw a video of him on Youtube, and enjoyed it, although I don’t agree that spreading your legs will necessarily protect you from a suplex.  View the clip after the jump.

Kensho-Ryu was founded by Grand Master Mark Sheeley, one of Professor Cerio’s top students, following the death of Professor Cerio. Grand Master Sheeley was one of the original board members for the NCK organization upon the Professor’s death.

Shihan Paul Parent is a first generation Professor Cerio black belt. He received his Shihan title from Grand Master Sheeley. Grand Master Sheeley received his 9th degree from George Pesare. In addition to holding dan rank in Nick Cerio’s Kenpo and a Shihan rank in Kensho-Ryu, Shihan Parent assists Lew Hicks in training various organizations across the United States.

I have studied under Shihan Parent since 1996.

Thanks for sharing more information. So what are the differences between Kensho-ryu and Cerio’s Kenpo? Is there a change in emphasis?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

The basic curriculum is mostly the same between NCK and Kensho-Ryu Kenpo. There were 3 NCK self-defense dictionaries over the years. A couple of the techniques from the old dictionaries replaced a couple of techniques in the last self-defense dictionary used in NCK. The under rank kata are the same, with the exception of the bo kata, which has been replaced with another bo kata (the original bo kata from NCK has been retained, but is taught at shodan).

I do not believe the fundamental emphasis has shifted between Kensho-Ryu and Nick Cerio’s Kenpo. A lot of the NCK school owners and students followed Grand Master Sheeley when he founded Kensho-Ryu. Like all karate systems, each school will have its own emphasis – but, that was true during the Professor’s life, too. Some schools are more kata focused, others on self-defense, still others on fighting.

I am not sure if the above adequately answers your question. If not, feel free to email me at craigparsonskerins1969@gmail.com and I can try to help further.
