More Honsuki info

Joe ‘Kenpojoe’ Rebelo has been working on a second DVD on the form Honsuki. This time he’s showcasing the variations that exist in the various Shaolin Kempo based schools. He’s posted a preview of about ten minutes of info on Youtube. Thoughts?

I’m always interested in the history and lineage of kempo. However, I think we can get to caught up in this. Forms are a tool they give us a catalog of movement and technique. They help develop power, balance and coordination. If the version you have of any given form does this then who cares if the guy down the street uses a cat stance instead of a half moon stance. When you watch a guy like Nick Cerio in his older videos working a form, you see he is really WORKING. This is the beauty of forms. The harder you work at them the more you get out of them.personaly I don’t care if a form was created by a blind monk on a snowy mountain,or in some ones basement. If it requires effort to learn and teaches solid technique that can be adapted and applied in a fight, I’m all for it.

Jason – you make a really good point. When I was teaching Tai Chi, I made a point to discourage people from thinking ‘this is the one right way’ as I had seen experts with far more experience than I doing things differently from each other. Additionally, I made sure to point out that the form was a tool; it was a means to an end. The point wasn’t to do the perfect form, it was to train your body to move a certain, hopefully useful way.
