Another one that I thought I had already posted about, but apparently didn’t: Jim Brassard teaches combination three. This is one of the fundamental techniques of Shaolin Kempo, and I’ve seen many interpretations of it. Here’s his:

Five Swords

One of the signature techniques of American Kenpo is Five Swords. If you see a demo of EPAK and don’t see it, I’ll lose kenpo demo bingo. Here’s the EPAK Version:

Well, Nick Cerio spent time with Ed Parker as his ‘Coach’, so naturally Five Swords found its way into his arsenal. Mark Golden offers up video of the Nick Cerio’s version. With extra credit.

Mark Golden uploaded this one, and it reminds me of Spear, Shield and Hammer by Professor Kimo Ferreira. He calls it ‘Snake and Crane’. There’s a thread to discuss it in the forum.

Jesse tipped me off that the folks at Masters Self Defense Centers have put up some new video. If you pop on over, you can see Professor James Bryant doing Combination 56, the Okinawan Kama form Kanegawa Nichogama, in addition to the previous offerings of Three Kata, and One Kata.

Of course, they still have video of Professor Robert Nohelty doing Four Pinan, and Five Pinan.

On their video page, they also have Professor Bryant doing Two Kata, and Braintree instructor Kevin Carmichael doing Six Kata.

Shushi no kon sho video as well.

The old DVD I was mining for footage also had a run through of Shushi no kon sho. It’s not the greatest footage, as the camera angle makes it look like I’m leaning forward, but this will make a good companion video to the one from youtube with Nick Cerio guiding a student through the form. I’ve added it to the existing Shushi No Kon Sho page. Hope you enjoy.

Billy Dunmire, Circle of the Tiger

I know we’ve already had a post on circle of the tiger, but here’s a slightly ‘crisper’ version of Circle of the Tiger done by Billy Dunmire (courtesy of YouTube). It’s a Nick Cerios Kenpo form that was based on 1-3 kata, and has been adopted by both USSD and MSDC. One more thing, you may want to fast forward about 1:20 into the video, as the first minute is him waiting to start.

‘Bill’ in this video has nearly the same kempos I had when I first went through the ranks. I’m not totally keen on how they are being done, but the fellow here is in the middle of a test, so he might be fatigued. I have no idea where the red belt falls in the scheme of things.

I have a friend in Canada, Marlon Wilson who consistently impresses me with the amount of thought he puts into his teaching. He’s also willing to put up video to challenge the rest of us to demonstrate ‘what kempo is about’ based on some great discussions on Martialtalk.

Here’s an example of a technique he posted to give a good example of a kempo technique. Note the emphasis on uprooting your opponent. As one former instructor told me, “it should be like being in a washing machine”

New Nenglis Video

Marlon Wilson has sent Some new video for Nenglis North and South, performed by his students Colin Narsted and Yanik Masson. It’s more of a ‘performance’ pace than the existing walk through. There are more on the way, so make sure to say ‘Thanks’ to Marlon. I’m going to put it on the existing Nenglis North and South pages as well.
