Alternate version of 31

Shaolinmonkmark sent in an alternate version of Combination 31 (DM31 in his neck of the woods) and it didn’t make it into the site (fell off my ‘to-do’ radar). It’s from the West Coast / Cerio lineage. He happened to mention it, and I was able to retrieve it from when he sent it to me last year. (Yikes!). If you do send something in and don’t hear from me / see it up, please remind me, as I have not ignored you intentionally.

A new voice at Kempoinfo

I recently asked my friend Marlon Wilson to contribute to Kempoinfo as he has been contributing to the kempo community for quite a while, and that I thought what he was saying was important. He’s been kind enough to start a page here sharing his perspective on kempo.

Besides being a frequent contributor to the blog (videos, ideas, etc.) he was my partner on my shodan test. I feel as if he and I paralleled a lot of experiences since then seeking out additional knowledge to make sense of our Shaolin Kempo background. I think that his path took him different places making his voice an important complement to the blog. Please make him feel welcome.

We’re still nailing down the best way to present his page, but that hasn’t stopped us from getting it rolling. Please check in and comment.

Steve Venturino sent me a comment and in it he let me know about his site kempoman.com. He’s also putting all his material up online, and mentioned a form I hadn’t heard of: The Bug form. He’s got it on a page of black belt forms.

I can see some of the traditional ingredients. Steve gives his training background on his page, and I look forward to collaborating with him to fill in some of the blanks in the archive. While you are over checking out his page, also take a look at the Kempoman game he’s trying to create.

EPAK Manuals from Ed Parker, Jr.

Ed Parker Jr. has been kind enough to type in belt manuals into Kenpotalk posts. These manuals were in the final stages of pre-print at the time of Ed Parker’s passing. Please check them out, but don’t be reselling them, etc.

Matt DeLuzio, one of Dominick Violante’s students was kind enough to send me combination 97 ages ago, even pointing out where it occurs in Sho ton Kwok, and I hadn’t put it up yet. It’s in now (apologies, Matt) and it prompted me to update the ‘What we have -what we need’ page, and I found that we now have 93 of the combinations, and need only 15. So, with that in mind, if anyone has these:

Need (15 total): 79,82-84,86,91,92, 95,98,99,104-108

Justin Terrien of Swansea Karate has posted a treasure trove of kempo on Youtube. As an example, he’s posted combinations 15, 22,43 and 47.

He also posts montages of kempos or belt techniques, and bunkai from the forms. I’ll definitely be featuring more of these.

I’m not usually one to trumpet anything of Christopher Geary’s, but he has done a service by hosting a .pdf of James Mitose’s trial transcript. If you don’t currently have a copy and are a historian, it’s a must read. So, without further ado, make it a point to download a copy. Right click (on windows) or control click (on a mac unless you have a multi-button mouse). Caution – it’s a 200MB download. Make sure you have time. I found it to be absolutely captivating reading. I paid big bucks for my copy back in the olden days. Hooray for technology.
