I have a friend who actually went to the temple that Mitose supposedly trained at. The records are surprisingly complete, but Mitose doesn't appear in them. See the article, in the form of a deposition given to Bullshido's Sam Browning.

looking forward to your review... my personal opinion is that, Mitose may have trained at a temple near Nagasaki, but we will never know for sure because anyone who could verify it was 'evacuated' form the countryside to the 'safety' of the city (Nagasaki)... and were then killed in the atomic blast.
It's as likely as any theory, and includes an atomic explosion, so it is even cooler :)
